STAGE 1
CAPE JABLANAC - BELI

STAGE 1

CAPE JABLANAC - BELI

Umag, the most western coastal town in Istria, is the start of this 6 day long mountain bike adventure. Despite seemingly crowded tourist area the route is quickly leading to the Istrian inland where hills and pittoresque towns are changing one after another on a mother nature stage. With a little over 3000 meters of altitude and climbing over the mountain and a nature park Učka, this first stage sets the race pace for the rest of the adventure. The day ends in Klana, small town situated in the densely forested Gorski kotar region as a preview you of the terrain following in the next stage.

KOSMAČEV POND

The biggest pond in Tramontana forest. It never dries out, and in winter it becomes almost a real small lake.

ČAMPARI CAVE

The deepest pit on the archipelago (-101 m), and one of the deepest on the Adriatic islands is located on Tramuntana, the northern part of the island of Cres, not far from the abandoned village Petrićevi. Many old signatures still stand in the entrance, cave part, mostly from 1942. According to the stories of the local population, they used to hide there during the political turmoil during the Second World War.

ISHTAR’S LABYRINTH

Ishtar’s labyrinth is dedicated to the goddess Ishtar, the goddess of love and fertility of the Babylonians and Assyrians.

Hiking the Via Dinarica Blue Trial in Croatia (2018). My version of a trail that is still in development. For more information check out my website, EVAdinarica Project.

Be creative, don't blindly follow the official Blue Trail or my track, but look on the map and combine the different tracks and trails.

When you're planning to hike the entire Via Dinarica Blue Trail, keep in mind that this is a trail in development. It is not officially open yet. This means that the official GPX track is not always accurate and the signposts and markations are sometimes old or not existing. The route I hiked tries to follow the Blue Trail as much as possible, but I also looked at the Via Adriatica Trail, made detours and of course I sometimes had to take an alternate route due to the weather.

This route is a combination of the Via Alpina, the Via Dinarica White Trail, other existing hiking trails in Slovenia, my own hiking tracks and Outdooractive routeplanner.
From the border with Italy to Predjama the route follows the Via Alpina red trail. From there on it's a combination of the newly Via Dinarica White trail and the Slovenski Planinarski Put to Gorenje. With the Slovenia 100Mile trail the route continues to Sveti Lovrenc, Planina and Rakov Škocjan. In Rakov Škocjan there is an education trail that leads you along the river Rak. Through the forest the water shows up again (or not) in the magical Cerkniško lake. During the summer the lake might dissapear completely. From Cerknica there is a well marked hiking path up to mount Slivnica, the home of the witches. Next mountain (hill) is Križna Gora next to Križna jama, a beautiful cave. This part of the route is part of the Cerknica Transversale.

In Stari Trg the route goes the the spring of river Obrh from where it follows a biking and hiking paths through Kočevje to the border at Petrina where you cross the Kolpa river to Croatia. Complete list with daystages: Walking from Amsterdam to Sarajevo

Excellent traffic connections make a simple and quick arrival to Cres possible to all visitors.

By car or by bus (by ferries)

There are two directions available by ferries : via Krk and via Istria
KRK: Krk Bridge – Ferry Terminal Valbiska (Krk)- Merag (Cres)
ISTRIA: Istria – Ferry Terminal Brestova (Istria) - Porozina (Cres)

Ferry tickets are sold at ferry terminals; however, you can't buy or book a ferry ticket in advance.

By boat

Many tourists come to Cres by their own yachts or they go on an organized boat tour. Coastal places on the island have particularly well arranged and equipped harbors.

By bus

A well-formed national bus line network reaches even the smallest villages on the island. Bus line Rijeka – Cres and Zagreb – Cres is available several times a day and during the summer also Ljubljana – Cres.
